Abstract

The first paragraphs in the “Sicilia” entry of the monumental Enciclopedia Italiana (published in vol. 31, 1936) are characterized by many of the tropes by which that region1 was rhetorically constructed during the ventennio nero. The Sicily that emerges from this entry is particularly revealing of the regime’s preoccupations during the years ranging from the early years of Fascist entrenchment in Tripolitania2 to the founding of the “Impero italiano” (the very same year—1936—of the Enciclopedia entry), to the September 8, 1943 Armistice agreement that marked the end of the ventennio in the Italian South: 3
