Abstract

When I was writing this piece, coincidentally, the national daily newspaper Kompas (January 18, 2013) had as its headline “Jakarta is paralyzed” (Jakarta tak berdaya), as Jakarta was being inundated by water from the heavy rain of the day before. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, whereas I live in Bandung, the capital city of the Province of West Java. Travelling to Jakarta is easy since the opening of the toll road between these two cities. It takes about two and a half hours by minibus.
