Abstract
Marriage, according to the white western traditions examined throughout this book, unites a couple as “one flesh.” The most extreme and asymmetrical incarnation of such union is the practice codified in English law as coverture.

This was apparently a rare and scandalous occurrence (Menefee 1981). The best-known example is fictional, in the opening chapter of Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge (1939).
