Abstract

This chapter gives a succinct overview of the development of the sport and the academic attention offered to women’s football to the present date, highlighting how this has contributed to knowledge of and current debates surrounding the sport. It includes work on not just the UK context but what has been learnt from the development of women’s football in Europe and North America. It provides a backdrop for our argument that an examination of the FAWSL can contribute to, extend and develop findings of previous research.
