Abstract
This chapter contains a brief description of parental acceptance-rejection theory (PARTheory), definitions of the major concepts used in PARTheory, and its basic assumptions, especially the assumptions of the theory’s personality sub-theory. It presents an overview of the attachment theory along with a brief comparison of these two theories. Discussion of conceptual frameworks of these two theories seems to be useful for a better understanding of the theoretical relationships among parental acceptance-rejection, attachment relationships, and psychological adjustment of children. The main focus is on the effects of parental acceptance and rejection on children’s psychological adjustment and healthy lifespan development, with supportive cross-cultural research evidence and its implications for health professionals, practitioners, clinicians, social workers, educators, and counsellors globally.
