Abstract

This chapter explores seven trends that shape the current UK labour market for graduates. These are (1) the fast expansion of higher education, (2) the recession and the widespread effects on the general labour market, (3) global economic integration, (4) the emergence of new graduate occupations, (5) new types of work organisations and technological change, (6) the war for talent and the elite labour market and (7) increasing wage differentiation. Using a wide range of literature and empirical data, I explain the economic and social contexts in which graduates are embedded.
