Abstract
I call this “British English” because the element of US-American fiction texts is rather small. So are the differences highlighted (see Chapter 3). This may be partly due to the size of the material — and also partly due to the fact that US literature, for a long time, modelled itself on British writings. The process of creating a distinctive, “American” voice did not start until the later 19th century (see, amongst others, Weisbuch, 1986).
