Abstract
Samuel Huntington’s main thesis in Political Order in Changing Societies (1968) is both simple and powerful: in states with weak political institutions the social changes caused by modernization bring about political disorder. The book was a blow for those optimists who tend to think that the fall of traditional societies automatically gives birth to egalitarian and fair political communities. Huntington emphasized that change brings the inherent risk of disorder, which is even worse than the evils of the traditional society left behind because no political project is viable within chaos. Huntington’s diagnosis carried an implicit recommendation: societies should strengthen their institutions before promoting political change.
