Abstract
After reading the previous chapter, it could be argued that little controlled research has been conducted to investigate ACT’s utility in treating substance abuse. The same criticism, however, cannot be levelled against the application of ACT to smoking cessation. In recent years, a plethora of research has been conducted in which the ACT model has shown great results in this area. Although we will come to the celebrated work of Dr Jonathan Bricker and colleagues in due course, it was an early study by Dr Liz Gifford that catalysed the research area.
