Abstract

Heavily tattooed bodies are commonly found among young people today. As João, a 24-year-old Lisbon tattooist said to me recently, “Everything, absolutely everything, has changed. From month to month and from year to year, I notice that there are more and more supporters of tattoos.” One of his customers, Luis, a 23-year-old shelf stacker, went further, saying that “Society is being forced to open its doors to our scenes … And this will grow. I think it’s going to reach the point of exaggeration. Even if it’s not the majority, lots of people will keep getting piercings and tattoos.”
