Abstract
Across Europe, the call for developing and implementing more effective active ageing policies has increased in recent years, as these are considered to be effective tools for tackling current and future demographic and welfare challenges deriving from population ageing. Labour market participation is one crucial area in which active ageing can be pursued. One way to prolong working life is to join or to remain in the labour market after having started receiving an old-age pension. Work beyond retirement age is becoming more frequent across Europe (Dubois and Anderson 2012). This may also apply to Italy, where a considerable share of pensioners stay in or join the labour market: in 2010, about nine per cent of all pensioners (that is, people receiving a pension) aged 55 years and over were in employment (own calculations based on ISTAT-INPS 2012 and INPS-ISTAT 2012b).
