Abstract

This chapter first presents the basic assumptions of Optimality Theory in section 3.1, and then gives a non-linguistic example (the leap year rule) of how the framework works in section 3.2. Finally, section 3.3 discusses three previous approaches to object shift within Optimality Theory.
