Abstract

There are many concepts to employ and ways to understand and interpret the United Kingdom. Similarly, Scotland’s status and place in the union that is the United Kingdom has been subject to numerous different meanings. This chapter starts from the assumption that to understand the latter — Scotland — one needs to have a conceptual understanding of what the UK is and is not.
