Abstract
Pavarotti singing “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot can reduce people to tears, but can sounds both cure and kill? Can hearing problems be behind depression, dyslexia, and autism? Is there a “brown note” that can cause people to lose control of their bowels? This chapter looks at sounds that are believed to make us smarter, sounds that are soothing, and sounds that are used to inflict suffering.
