Finding Fulfillment in a Hobby

In this chapter, we will follow much the same road map as in Chapter 3, though now with interest centered on the five types of hobbies and their subtypes. The main interest here is, as it was earlier, to examine the nature of the first three stages of the fulfillment career in collecting, making and tinkering, noncompetitive participatory activities, sports and games (without professional counterparts), and the liberal arts hobbies. As we have done earlier, here also we will consider careers in each type as they are shaped by the six distinguishing qualities and the various costs and rewards. Similarly, maintenance and decline will, for the most part, be taken up later in Chapter 7, which deals mainly with the kinds of devotee work that can follow from these hobbies.
