Abstract
Think of the Silk Road for a moment. When I do this, several images seem to project themselves inside my mind. I see rich Romans clothed in Chinese silk, the colors bright and slightly intoxicating. I visualize large caravans of traders and their camels traversing central Asia, laden with luxurious goods destined for the West. However, other than these intensely clichéd images, before writing this book there was little else I could tell you about the Silk Road. I suspect that you, the reader, will probably be endowed with more knowledge.
So soft to touch its threads so deftly weaved,
By hands Asian to flow to Rome so eased,
Carried across deserts and paths and more,
Destined for those Romans never called poor.
