Abstract
Returning to my splendid Beijing hotel room on Chinese New Year 2014, I found a gold-wrapped chocolate coin placed on my pillow. Underneath was a hongbao packet designed in auspicious red and gold (it’s no accident that these two colors comprise the Chinese flag) with a note explaining why the year of the horse is considered lucky in Chinese astrology.
