Abstract
There are several ways to better understand the dramatic changes in China’s travel topography. Staying in one of its deluxe city hotels reveals the elevation of standards of service and amenities. The Peninsula Shanghai, for instance, was voted the World’s Best Business Hotel in 2013 by Travel + Leisure magazine. Taking a high-speed train reminds visitors that rail networks can be central to a national transport strategy, while the proliferation of east coast cruise terminals presages a predicted boom in ocean cruising. But to best check the pulse of how China travel has, and hasn’t, changed, head to one of its new airports and take a flight.
