“In Europe It’s Different”: Homonationalism and Peripheral Desires for Europe

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Gender and Politics series ((GAP))

Abstract

The imperative to resist nationalist and racist co-optations of sexual diversities in Western societies has taken center stage in both queer theory and politics in recent years. In the contemporary Huntingtonian scenario (Huntington 1996) in which cultural differences are mobilized for exclusionary and violent purposes, openness to sexual diversity is being increasingly hailed as a quintessential feature of Western societies that must be defended against racialized others. As Haritaworn et al. (2008: 86) point out:

Freedom of speech, democracy, women’s liberation and gay rights are all invoked to legitimate Islamophobia and attack the rights of all racialised people... [T]hese attacks have direct consequences on the lives of all people of colour, especially those among us whose pheno- type is read as “Muslim.”
