Abstract

The US market is the larger and older market for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) that defines the guidelines for the worldwide development of this instrument. Many countries have instituted a similar real estate structure to facilitate the development of their domestic real estate industries and — except for the Netherlands, which started in 1969 — REITs have been issued in some European countries since the 1990s (Brounen and De Koning, 2012) (see Table 2.1).
