Abstract
This final chapter aims to provide a synthesis of what has gone before in this book through integrating the theoretical perspectives of Chapter 2 and the results of the empirical research in Chapter 3 into the policy context of current mobility provision and priorities discussed in the previous chapter. Ultimately, the goal is to consider reasons for the apparently low level of student mobility, revealed in Chapter 4 to be in the region of 10 per cent of European students in respect to institutional movers, and to find ideas that might contribute to stimulating more and better quality mobility. Despite the inevitably speculative nature of much of this chapter, the ideas presented are meant to be thought-provoking and, where possible, of practical value to those working in the youth mobility sector as well as students and graduates seeking to move abroad. This is an important part of this book since researching mobility should not only be an academic exercise. As Chapter 4 has reminded us, it is vital for young people’s development, especially tertiary-educated young people, to have good quality mobility opportunities and sufficient mobility chances, and better mobility practice can also ultimately contribute to the meeting of strategic social and economic aims within the EU.
