Abstract
Bosnia and Herzegovina (hereafter referred to as BiH or Bosnia) declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) on 15 October 1991 in the middle of a deep and dramatic political crisis. The first country to officially recognize Bosnia and Herzegovina was Bulgaria on 17 January 1992, the European countries followed on 6 April and the United States (US) and Croatia on 7 April.
