Abstract
Over the course of history, a more or less shared worldview emerges from philosophy, religion, culture and science. Slowly, it becomes apparent that man is positioned between the material and the non-material-spiritual and between his individuality and the ‘others’. Throughout the ages and from all sides he is called upon to retain the equilibrium within that force field. Time and again, the message is that developments can only continue if a certain middle way is found between fundamental opposites within that social value pattern.
Sustainable development is the continuation of that which we consider valuable.
