Abstract

Over the past 25 years in the United States of America (US), Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and EHR systems have moved from an interest and priority of a few enthusiasts to becoming a central pillar in national health policy. The aim is now for a learning healthcare system that engages all relevant stakeholders. This chapter reviews the high points of how this substantial shift in policy, technology and practice has come to pass. The perspective is that of an informed player who has been engaged in these processes as well as been a witness to these activities and developing benchmarks. The health domains covered include care, research and education. Both the prospects and challenges going forward are discussed, including the importance of harmonising efforts across the globe. In sum, the prospects remain favourable despite the complexity involved and some daunting policy challenges.
