Abstract
Russian attitudes toward Europe, manifested today in intellectual milieus including the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), have been shaped by views that originated in Russia almost two centuries ago in the dispute between the Slavophiles and the Westernizers. In those constructions, the notion of Europe generally appeared as a personification of the West and the fundamental difference between Europe and Russia was the apparent juridicism of all aspects of European life.
