Abstract

Having arrived in the United States as a political refugee when I was 17 years old, I have lived most of my life keenly aware of the fact that I am considered an outsider by many I encounter every day and even by those I have worked with for decades. Very early on in my life, I felt obliged to learn about the movement of peoples across national borders and about the economics and politics of immigration.
