Abstract
The press is the medium with the longest history of trust ownership but it does not have a monopoly on this form of news media governance. In the electronic age broadcasters and news services have used trustees as a guarantor of editorial independence and as a bulwark against state interference. Now they are emerging as guardians for the growing ranks of not-for-profit and low-profit start-ups that aim to secure the future for serious journalism in the digital age.
