Abstract
Two books highly critical of press ownership appeared on either side of the Atlantic as nations were about to emerge from the First World War. Almost a century later their content leaves modern readers with a curious sense of déjà vu. There is nothing new about claims of journalistic or institutional failure and the belief that the news media is rushing headlong toward a precipice. A survey of the intervening years reveals a recurring inability or unwillingness to find enduring solutions. The inevitable conclusion is that significant structural change in private news media governance will require extraordinary action by extraordinary people.
