Abstract

I started the book (Preface) by pointing to a set of practical local and global issues facing China and the world at large; there I suggested that a broader, culturally conscious and critical, discursive approach would make important contributions to our understanding. Then in the Introduction, I asked whether existing discourse research would be up to the job, but found it to be only counterproductive as it currently stands; thus, subsequently, I proposed a culturally more appropriate paradigm of discourse studies for investigating the discourses of contemporary Chinese society, the main concern of the present book.
