Abstract

On the basis of the Indispensability Argument (Section 33), digitalists affirm the existence of an abstract background of mathematical objects. For digitalists, the most prevalent abstract objects are sets. Among sets, the simplest is the empty set, which does not contain any members. The empty set is denoted {}. But simpler sets are members of more complex sets. Hence the empty set is a member of the set of the empty set, which is written as {{}}. And both {} and {{}} are members of {{}, {{}}}.
