Abstract

The International Fellowships Program (IFP) was launched in South Africa in 2002, a euphoric time as South Africa left behind its history of apartheid policies that had suppressed the majority of its citizens and set a course to become an inclusive democratic state. For a democratic society to emerge and provide its citizens equal treatment and the same rights and opportunities, a great deal of transformation was (and still is) required. Given the long-term effects of an education system which prevented the majority of the citizens from accessing quality basic education, let alone higher education, transformation that addresses social injustices of the past is bound to be a long journey fraught with many challenges.
