Abstract
This chapter provides a descriptive introduction to the structure and organisation of business and work in the maritime sector and explains how the globalisation of the modern industry has led to institutional structures and work organisation that may contribute to the poor occupational health and safety outcomes for seafarers identified in Part I. It argues that the sector presents an instance of a highly globalised industry, driven largely by the dictates of the free market and, at the same time, in certain key respects remains both fragmented and parochial.
