Theoretical Perspective

  • Chapter
Educational Upward Mobility

Abstract

A theoretical outline is now necessary for two reasons. First, as working without a theory is impossible, the author must make as many of her assumptions explicit and transparent as possible. Second, a theoretical perspective enables us to go beyond sheer description of empirical data to explanation. We can offer an idea of a social phenomenon’s structure and function.
