Abstract
Europeans fear the enemy within. There are alienated Muslims in Europe. But there is no evidence that satellite delivered content is a cause of alienation. Nearly all (90 per cent) of the households surveyed watched a combination of Arabic language and national television. There is no retreat into ethnic media worlds. Indeed most Arabic speakers are multiply connected into events in their European country.
Numerous satellite dishes in immigrant neighbourhoods are believed to reflect where the loyalties of these people really lie… [W]e found that almost three-quarters of all Turkish and Moroccan youngsters — including those born in the Netherlands — identified more strongly with their country of origin than with the Netherlands.
