Abstract
The previous chapters of this book have shown some of the huge progress that Brazil has achieved on the political, economic and social fronts. Recently, however, the notion of a “winning Brazil” has become a hard sell to many of its citizens. In June 2013, for the first time in decades, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets to express their frustration with the growing mismatch between rising living costs, high taxes and decaying public services. Worried that the country might be stuck in a middle-income trap, Brazil’s weekly publication Exame touched a nerve by asking on its cover in August 2013: “Will we ever be rich?” As authors, we were frankly taken by surprise by this unprecedented wave of protests and pessimism, along with many outside observers.
