Abstract
In this chapter I will focus on Japan-Korea relations. But to get a full appreciation of what needs to happen in that area, it is essential to discuss two prior issues. First, how does Japan regain its sense of common national purpose—a sense that has been there at times in Japan’s past but that has been lost in the last two decades? Second, if such a common national purpose can be found, can it be turned effectively into a road map for Japanese actions in its foreign policy? In this context, I then offer my thoughts on how Japan can best rise again in conjunction with its relations with its nearest neighbor, South Korea.
