Abstract

Liberal norms like individual freedom and equality play, of course, a role in the political and economic liberal theories and policies discussed in the previous two chapters. The political institution of democracy and the organization of economies based on private property and free mar- kets are thought to embody and help realize the norms of individual freedom and equality. Although normative liberal approaches of course aim to realize the same core liberal norms, they approach this task in a different way and thus deserve independent discussion.
