Abstract

The condition of Italy’s finances can best be described if the budget report made by the Secretary to the Treasury, Signor Soleri, on 29 September 1944, is brought up to a later date, 10 December, and analysed.

First published in The Economist, From a Correspondent in Rome, 3 March 1945, p. 282. The article, unsigned, was published in the section: ‘The World Overseas’. Its attribution to Luigi Einaudi is certain because a typed manuscript entitled ‘Italian finances’ and dated ‘Rome, 10 February 1945’, with handwritten corrections by the author, is in the Einaudi archives.
