Political Changes and Trade Unions

  • Michael A. Oyelere

The four case studies and their history were reviewed in the preceding chapter. That chapter provided insight into the differing roles played by each of these unions in the development of a single industrywide and national labour union. The cases suggest an interaction between, on the one hand, those parts of history that are specific to one individual union, and on the other hand, the characteristics of the local context of each of these unions. The history and distribution of natural resources aided by the composition of the local political economies help explain the dominance of certain ethnic groups in the leadership of these unions. They also explain the bitter rivalry that dominated the unions prior to the unification decree.
