Rethinking the Way We Work

Abstract

WHILE MOST ORGANIZATIONS CAREFULLY SELECT, train, and support their people to meet the challenges of the jobs they are hired to fill, I have yet to encounter an organization that hires, trains, and manages people based on the realities of the hidden curriculum of work. In fact, the fundamental system on which organizations structure their operations is based on what I call the Standard Model of Work (SMW), and there is virtually no formal acknowledgment of the presence and impact of the hidden side of work This fundamental oversight can drive people crazy.
