Abstract
This book is ostensibly about youth gangs in Australia. It has acknowledged debates and controversies surrounding the definition and interpretation of youth gangs. It has drawn upon extensive empirical research into the life worlds of street-frequenting young people around the country. This research has been carried out over the course of almost 20 years, and has taken the form of face-to-face interviews, survey questionnaires and document analysis. The book has tried to be sensitive to the voices and concerns of the young people, as well as providing a conceptual lens through which to understand what is being said and why.
