Abstract
The historian Elaine McFarland has explored Scotland’s Irishmen’s participation in the war effort. In line with this perspective, this chapter further pictures the impact of the Irish community’s involvement and its consequences back home. Whatever the degree of Irish mobilization during the war, Scottish perception of Irish efforts was fundamentally ambivalent. From a local political perspective, this chapter also examines how the war undoubtedly contributed to an accelerated promotion of local Irish figures both on parochial and municipal boards. The Irish developed a sense of local patriotism, compatible with their Irish nationalism.
