Have Traveled, Will Write: User-Generated Content and New Travel Journalism

  • Chapter
Travel Journalism

Abstract

Open any weekend newspaper and you will see at least one travel feature, often written by a freelancer whose passion for travel is equaled by enthusiasm for talking about it. On the Internet, thousands of sites celebrate and promote travel, explicitly through exhortations to ‘come and visit’ and glowing accounts of facilities and services associated with a place. Blogs are supplemented by ‘likes’ on Facebook and comments on travel sites; homespun photos and videos compete for attention with professional attempts to showcase destinations. Another layer is contributed by amateur reviews and ratings of hotels and restaurants, tourist attractions and other travel services.
