Reciprocities and Tensions: DEFA and the East German Entertainment Industry

Abstract

DEFA as monopoly film industry occupied a privileged position in East Germany. Compared to its West German counterparts operating in a competitive market economy, the studio appeared to work under ideal conditions. There were no domestic contenders due to the centralized structure of East Germany, and DEFA never had to compete for film funding. In fact, film financing for approved productions was not a problem, and its productions did not have to break even, let alone make profit at the box office. Yet, although it was a state-owned enterprise in a centrally governed socialist political system, DEFA compares to many other global film industries.
