Abstract
Hydebank Wood is a purpose-built male Young Offenders’ Centre close to Belfast’s outer ring road. It is a medium-security prison set in a pleasant, wooded environment. The outer, chain-link fence provides a relatively clear view from within and the undulating land gives variation and a feeling of ‘openness’ to the site. A visitors’ centre accommodates family, legal and other professional visits. The five residential houses form a slightly elevated arc across green and well-kept gardens.
