How ‘real’ is reality television in China? On the success of a Chinese dating programme

  • Chapter
Real Talk: Reality Television and Discourse Analysis in Action

Abstract

Globalization has brought about similarities in world media formats, among other things. Postcolonial theory in media studies claims that the Western media productions ‘are exported around the world and set the standard for local media production’ (Laughey 2007, p. 122). Furthermore, according to Laughey, Theodor Adorno’s theory of media and culture suggests the idea of ‘standardization’ whereby the ‘pursuit of consumer demand generates superficial differences between massproduced commodities based on stylistic quirks, as opposed to substantial variations in quality’ (p. 124). This seems to indicate that media in non-Western cultures in the world are at a vulnerable position and stand to be colonized by the Western media.
