Norbert Elias was a witness to the twentieth century. His commitment to taking a long-term view of the process of societal change emerged from a long life (1897–1990), the formative years of which were forged in a nation that underwent rapid spurts of development in both positive and negative directions. Clearly, to have anything meaningful to say about these events, a long-term view was essential
