Abstract
The outbreak of the First World War initially unites the local community in Gisborne. Walter and Joan immediately commit themselves to the patriotic cause. Walter provides medical training to the National Reserve and Joan leads groups of women making clothing and equipment for soldiers. By September 1918 they have decided to leave the town.
