Abstract
Yard time is over; the prisoners who have been outside walk up the stairs and into wing four. Tarik, sweaty after playing football, asks if I want to join him in his cell for a chat, and I do. Tarik was recently sentenced to 16 years in prison for drug smuggling. He is one of the few on the wing who say they are innocent — the only thing he has done is to have the wrong friends, friends who smuggle drugs and earn lots of money.
