Abstract
Thomas Carlyle’s references to the “dismal science” in the first of his Latter-Day Pamphlets [1850, pp.38, 39] are not to economics but to political economy.
Economics is the science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses.
